Tips on Plant Care

Watering House Plants

There are no exact recommendations that we can give you for watering plants your house plants. There are some general guidelines though, that can help you.

  • When you water your plant you should thoroughly wet the soil.
  • Water the plant until the water begins to drain out of the bottom of the pot.
  • How often you need to water your plant depends on many things, including what type of plant you have.
  • You should avoid watering more frequently than required because wet soils can lead to root rot. Excessively wet soils also lack the oxygen that is required for root growth.
  • You should always water your house plants with room temperature water.
  • When you can, it is good to use rain water for plants sensitive to fluorides, such as Dracaenas, Codlin, and Chlorophytum.
  • If your plant gets yellowing foliage, than the plant is probably suffering from poor soil aeration.

Re-potting House Plants

Re-potting your house plants can be a difficult task. You must make sure that your plant actually needs to be re-potted. Re-potting your plants when they do not need it is a major cause of plant problems.

There are several instances when you should never repot your plant:

  • You should never repot a newly purchased plant, it needs time to acclimate
  • Re-potting a sick or dying plant is very dangerous, it will only weaken the plant and likely kill it
  • Never repot a plant simply because it looks like it needs a bigger pot. Always do your research before you repot.

Fresh-Cut Flowers

  • Always make sure the vase is clean, do not use harsh detergents when cleaning vases
  • Always keep the water clean & fresh. You wouldn't like to sit in dirty water, would you?
  • Cut the bottoms (approx 1/4") every couple of days to allow a fresh passage for the flower's much needed water and nutrients
  • Let tap water sit over night. This will allow chemicals in your water to settle.
